Tho Xuan Community, Thanh Hoa Province - Active Community for common interests

Tho Xuan Community, Thanh Hoa Province - Active Community for common interests Last November, LPSD had a trip to Tho Xuan district, Thanh Hoa province to meet people in Xuan Thien and Quang Phu communes. This is the first time LPSD have had a field trip to the locality, so this meeting was extremely special.

Farewell is the beginning of new journeys

Maybe every journey, every trip or only simply the duration of work everywhere always brings us experiences or unforgettable memories. When it came to the farewell party with third-time interns in 2017, one saying of my teacher popped up in my mind : “Every story has an ending, but in life every ending is just the beginning of the new chapter”.

“Solidarity day” experience – Team bonding sessions

Besides organizing job-related events, LPSD maintains multiple extracurricular activities for all of the staff at the Center. One notable example is the very popular and highly anticipated activity - Team bonding sessions, also known endearingly by the name "Solidarity day".

LETTER FROM GLOBAL INVESTORS TO GOVERNMENTS OF THE G20 NATIONS

This letter is signed by 390 investors representing more than USD $22 trillion in assets   With that in mind, we call on global leaders to:   • Continue to support and implement the Paris Agreement, including the implementation of NDCs and 2050 climate plans to achieve the goals of that agreement.   • Drive investment into the low carbon transition through aligning climate-related policies, phasing out fossil fuel subsidies and including carbon pricing where appropriate.   • Implement climate-related financial reporting frameworks, including supporting the Financial Stability Board Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures recommendations.   We provide further detail on each of these three areas for action in the companion briefing paper entitled “Governments urged to maintain momentum on climate change action”.

THOUGHTS FROM A SINGAPOREAN INTERN ON A FIELD TRIP

On my first day of work, I was spontaneously asked to join an overnight field trip to Thanh Hoa provinces. LPSD had planned to meet the People’s Committee and Fatherland Front authorities, and the community leaders involved in the Nicotex Thanh Thai pesticide pollution case and the Ngoc Lac illegal waste dumping case on 9th May 2017. Near the Nicotex Thanh Thafactory, abnormal numbers of villagers have contracted cancer and suffered from miscarriage and birth defects, while the non-treatment of waste in Ngoc Lac creates a dangerous environment for air-borne and water-borne diseases to thrive. The field trip was the perfect opportunity to see how LPSD works with communities and to learn about its advocacy (in both the legal and public participation senses of the word) work in the Vietnamese context.

Nicotex: story of life

Mrs. Le Thi Thuy, who lives in Cam Van commune, Cam Thuy District, said: “The Nicotex Thanh Thai factory has been operating since 1998. After being in operation for three years, people living in the area began to smell the stench from around the factory”. Currently, the factory has suspended for three years. However, whenever there is rainfall, the area around the factory stinks badly, affecting the lives of the people. Even on days when the weather changes, the local people have to take all children out of the village to avoid the pollution affecting their health.

Meeting with Centre for Advanced Research on Global Change - when lawyers and scientists share the same voice

On 17 March 2017, the Law and Policy of Sustainable Development Research Center (LPSD) had a great opportunity to receive the representatives from Centre for Advanced Research on Global Change (CARGC) as part of LPSD’s comprehensive partnership building to support severely affected communities by environmental pollution. CARGC is a public service unit under the management of Hanoi University of Natural Resources and Environment (HUNRE) and established under Decision No.188/QĐ-TĐHHN on 27 January 2015 with a mission to research and advise the board of directors in national and international scientific projects, while simultaneously providing public services in education, science and technology on in the global change field.  The representatives of the two centers positively discussed and shared about the work and experiences in different sectors such as: training, research, community support and legal advocacy.

Farewell meeting with the Q1/2017 interns & Welcoming the Q2/2017 interns

The Law and Policy of Sustainable Development Research Center, founded in 2007, is an organization that uses science and technology, law and policy for benefit of communities. At the moment, we are co-operating with individuals, organizations and experts in Vietnam and other countries, who have a high level of expertise in law, science, society, economics and environment, in order to contribute to developing our nation in globalized world. Because of that, the internship programs are designed to create suitable conditions for young people to work and gather experience in their fields.

The Nicotex community yearns for clean water

At the fourth community meeting, LPSD had the opportunity to talk to representatives of the people of three communes in Thanh Hoa Province: Cam Van and Cam Tam communes in the Cam Thuy district, and Yen Lam commune in the Yen Dinh district. Representatives shared about the lives of the people in the commune, as well as the issues surrounding the Clean Water Supply project which is being implemented in the locality.

SHARING KNOWLEDGE AND ENHANCING SKILLS FOR THE PEOPLE OF QUANG PHU COMMUNE, XUAN THIEN COMMUNE – THO XUAN DISTRICT – THANH HOA PROVINCE

According to the people of Xuan Thien and Quang Phu Commune, Tho Xuan district, Thanh Hoa province, there were signs of local officials abusing their legitimate rights and interests. As such, on Feb 16th 2017, representatives of the two communes visited the Law and Policy of Sustainable Development Research Center (LPSD) and asked for assistance.

The first scoping trip of LPSD in Nghia Dan District, Nghe An Province

On 25th and 26th April 2017, the Law and Policy of Sustainable Development Research Center (LPSD) established a working group to examine issues relating to the TH true MILK factory in Nghia Dan district, Nghe An province. Through this trip, LPSD would like to verify the information reflected by the press as well as to identify the problems and aspirations of the local people.
